Youth: BARKING AT THE WRONG TREE
I was walking along the hallway somewhere, when I heard a panel of youngster talking about the recently awarded CNN Hero Efren “Kuya Ef” Peñaflorida. Some of them are asking why it was Kuya Efren”? The other one that, “is their any other Filipino who actually had imparted a lot for his countrymen than Kuya Efren”? Then the last one said “the voting is not fair because we can vote as many times as we wanted to, maybe Kuya Efren had done something to increase his vote. I know their notions might be right and it might wrong too, however the moment I heard those words uttered by a youngster the other side of my heart got impair. It’s so poignant that a youth will talked like this while Kuya Efren is in focus for saving the other youth’s future through his pushcart classes. As I look upon, I made a choice of researching a little about Kuya Efren’s life and achievement for my mind to be at peace.
Accordingly Kuya Efren is a teacher and social worker in the Cavite City in where he had experienced a lot of things. He was harassed and threatened by gangs near his school. He has seen gangster bullied and mistreated his schoolmates. As he grow his concern for the unschooled children in his hometown also grow. This led him to established Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) to help and educate out of school youth. Its mission then was to keep the youth away from trouble and vices. At that time he was only sixteen. He envisioned this organization as a tool to reach the underserved Filipino youth by providing free tutorials in the push-cart. He asked his three fellow students to help him in his vision. They started to teach children from the slum areas then after 10 years now their organization gained around 10,000 members and conducted tutorials for approximately 1,500 children.
Today, DTC’s “pushcart classroom” also teaches basic reading and writing to street children. He is the founder of Dynamic Teen Company (DTC), an organization training young children to become responsible, systematic and principled. DTC is an organization of young Filipinos is actively making a difference in the lives of children in depressed areas.
Kuya Efren is one of the nominees of Global Youth Awards 2008 in the Humanos category where he is also cited to one of the 2009 CNN Heroes. He was first featured in a World Vision, USA documentary about kids living in the worst conditions. Despite of these conditions, Kuya Efren showed responsibility when their family started a noodle micro business to help make both ends meet. An intelligent student in elementary, he was given scholarship assistance by World Vision Phils. As a student was very studious and industrious. He was given several class honors and awards in elementary and high school. He was awarded highest honor for Associate in Computer Technology of San Sebastian College- Recoletos Batch 2000. There was a time when he skipped a class to convince a peer to abandon his attempt to kill himself. He also stood up against an abusive teacher and brought the complaint to the City Schools Division Superintendent to protect his classmates.
For several years, he’s a regular “viajero” of fish crackers from Baclaran to Cavite and sells these in school to be able to help his family. It has been his commitment to improve the standard of public secondary education. To be able for him to make more difference in the lives of other youth in the near future he is currently enrolled at Cavite State University, pursuing Secondary Education as a second course

Kuya Efren and The Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) aims to uplift the lives of underprivileged children younger than themselves through education. Armed with only a pushcart full of books and other educational materials, DTC brings the classroom to children and educate in slum areas, dumpsites and even in the cemetery.
Kuya Efren really exudes the qualities of an everyday hero. His life would seem ordinary, but the tasks he undertakes are extraordinary, earning the respect of his peers and even parents whom he helped in the past. Today, Kuya Efren wants to address the growing issue of juvenile delinquents. He also wants to address moral, and the values of education of today’s youth. A boy named Michael Advincula is a living example of the group’s positive work. The organization was able to help Advincula turn his life around for the better. Advincula used to be a thief and an Akyat Bahay gang member. Now, he is a full time volunteer and scholar of DTC.
“Nagbago po yung buhay ko dahil sa pagtutok nila sa akin. Tinuro nila lahat ng pwede kong malaman, na dahil po doon nakita ko na kaya po pa lang tumulong at tulungan yung mga tulad ko po. Dati sa madilim na parte ng buhay, sila po nag-angat ng buhay ko,” said Advincula.”
He is not only a Cavite’s Pride and Finest. Kuya Efren is definitely a Philippines pride and finest because now he was avowed to the “First Filipino CNN Hero of the Year 2009 for his outstanding advocacy to educate Filipino out-of-school youth through “pushcart classes.”
