States continue to add youth hunts
Since 2004 thirty states have adopted youth hunts to encourage and promote hunting to the future hunters of America. These hunting programs in most states require that the youth hunter take a hunters safety course before they head out. Youth hunt programs not only encourage hunter safety but also a strong hunting tradition and it gets youths outside away from video games and Facebook (they’ll still have their cell phones to post pictures).
I really like to see these youth hunt programs established in states and feel that every state should introduce some kind of youth hunt. Hunters who learn how to hunt properly will help to eliminate accidents in the field where proper education and training might not have existed. If we can encourage the youth of America to hunt safely and with respect to the animal and surroundings then we will be able to minimize over hunting and trophy hunters . It is important to encourage youth hunters because if we don’t the smaller number of hunters in the future (due to aging baby boomers) will not be able to control deer or other animal populations. If we don’t teach the youth to hunt now then we will be doing nothing but encouraging trophy hunters in the future because we simply won’t be able to control populations.
The youth hunts that are established continue to grow in certain states like Nebraska, Kansas, and South Dakota with these states either expanding youth hunt sessions or lowering the cost of tags. Growth in the youth hunt programs does need to be controlled though. If a state has a youth hunt program then the only person that should be allowed to hunt should be the youth. The adult hunter should not be allowed to take shots because we need them to be focusing on teaching the youth hunters. I realize that it would be hard to control some adult hunters from hunting during youth season but I feel that it is worth the risk.
Some groups such as the Humane Society criticize the youth hunting restrictions because they feel that it puts children in unnecessary danger but since 2004 there has not been an increase in hunting incidents involving youth hunters. Since there has not been an increase in youth related hunting accidents it makes me feel a little easier about having youth hunts because they are more controlled and monitored than if they were out on their own without previous formal safety education.
As long as we continue to control and monitor these youth hunts I have no problem with him occurring and actually highly encourage such activities to continue. Buy a youth a steak and you feed them for a day, Teach a youth to hunt and you feed them for a lifetime.

The spoon bowl and fork head are not as rounded as those in the baby set, but the knife handle is sturdy and broad for a good gr… |
